General Information

To determine the percentage of DNA a person has from each of these four groups, the test examines 175 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). SNPs are DNA sequence variations that occur when a single nucleotide (A,T,C,or G) in the genome sequence is altered. For example a SNP might change the DNA sequence AAGGCTAA to ATGGCTAA. For a variation to be considered a SNP, it must occur in at least 1% of the population. SNPs, which make up about 90% of all human genetic variation, occur every 100 to 300 bases along the 3-billion-base human genome.

Ethnic Ancestry DNA Testing examines 175 SNPs that have been selected based on their bio-geographic polymorphism patterns, and are referred to as Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs). The alleles found at these marker locations show very high specificity for people from particular populations, ethnicity and/or geographical regions. Ethnic Ancestry DNA Analysis can resolve markers into the following four groups:

Native American: Populations that migrated from Asia to inhabit North, South and Central America

European: European, Middle Eastern and South Asian populations from the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

East Asian: Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Koreans, Southeast Asians and
Pacific Islanders, including populations native to the Philippines

African: Populations from Sub-Saharan Africa such as Nigeria and the Congo region

Ethnic Ancestry DNA Analysis can predict the mixture of continental origin(s) a person comes from, but is limited in its ability to predict mixtures of intra-continental ancestral composition. For example, the test could indicate that someone is of 87% European descent and 13% Native American decent. To further resolve their intra-continental origin, more testing is needed.

DNA Diagnostic testing to further resolve intra-continental ancestral composition examines 320 SNP markers ( including the 175 AncestryByDNA markers) to determine the following European lineages:

Northern European
Southeastern European (Mediterranean)
Middle Eastern
South Asian

Extensive intra-continental ancestral composition analysis is only available to participants whose primary results reveal greater than 50% for European ancestry, less than 15% for African ancesty, less than 40% for East Asian ancestry, and less than 15% for Native American ancestry.
