General Information
Paternal Ancestry Y-STR DNA Testing involves comparing certain DNA sequences to determine the probability of a common male ancestor.

Paternal Ancestry Y Chromosome STR DNA research involves short tandem repeat (STR) and, sometimes, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) testing of the Y-chromosome. The Y-chromosome is present only in males and reveals information on the strict paternal line. These tests can provide insight in the recent (via STRs) and ancient (via SNPs) genetic ancestry. A Y-chromosome STR test will reveal a haplotype, which should be similar among all male descendants of a male ancestor. SNP tests are used to assign people to a paternal haplogroup, which defines a genetic population.

Paternal Ancestry Y Chromosome STR DNA Testing allows males to pinpoint specifically the origin of their paternal DNA. Specific regions along the Y chromosome are analyzed and compared with known DNA population studies. Using this information the origins of the father's ancestry can be elucidated. Questions to determine your paternal global migration patterns and geographic points of origin can be answered fast and effectively to provide information that once was never possible.

Markers on the Y-chromosome are inherited from father to son. Several Y-chromosome markers are unique to specific populations (or haplogroup). Approximately 18 major human paternal lineages exist, many of which are continent specific. In depth analysis identifies these lineages through the analysis of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) located on the Y-chromosome. Multiple regions of the Y-chromosome are analyzed to provide the most information possible about a paternal lineage.
Paternal Ancestry Y Chromosome STR DNA Testing reveals ancestral information that can be traced to distant lineages. An individual that has a very old DNA lineage can usually be identified to a continental region such as Western Europe. Younger lineages can be identified to more specific regions, such as Southwest North America. Very young Y-chromosome lineages could provide even more detailed, population specific information.
